Between June and August 2021, PUC-Rio offered the extension course Environmental Law and Climate Change and had JUMA researchers Danielle de Andrade Moreira, Stela Luz Andreatta Herschmann and Letícia Maria R.T. Lima as members of its faculty.
Theme: The climate crisis is a reality and the law has a central role in confronting it. Until recently, discussions on climate change took place almost exclusively in international forums and they were conducted by a select group of specialists and diplomats. Now, these discussions have grown more democratic. The climate crisis has become one of the priorities of organized civil society. It occupies the pages of newspapers daily and is the subject of national and subnational policies. It has gained traction in both the private sector and the financial market, and has already reached multiple courts. In this context, and in light of climate denial discourses that seek to minimize or relativize the climate emergency, understanding the legal aspects of this subject is fundamental for the formation of defense of the right to an ecologically balanced environment and climate stability.
Objective: To offer a critical analysis of the role of environmental law in combating climate change.
Target Audience: Although the course deals with legal issues, it is aimed not only at law professionals and students, but also at professionals from other fields who may be interested in discussing climate change.
Methodology: Live classes were conducted through Zoom. All classes were recorded and were available for 60 days after the end of the course.
